Our vet has years of experience dealing with animal travel requirements
When you travel abroad, you make sure you have the necessary vaccinations and a valid passport, don’t you? Did you know your pet needs exactly the same in order to leave the country?
If you intend to take your companion travelling with you it is recommended you begin the process of obtaining the necessary paperwork at least 6 weeks before you are due to leave. This is because your pet will require vaccinations (and in some cases a blood test) before they are deemed ‘fit’to travel.
There are a number of things your pet needs before they go on holiday. These include:
A microchip –for more information please click here
A rabies vaccination* (one injection will protect your pet for up to 3 years. They can have this vaccination from 12 weeks of age)
A full health assessment conducted by our vet Emma to ensure your companion is healthy, has no conditions which could be passed on to other animals, and is up to date with parasite control
A health certificate which Emma will complete once she is satisfied your companion is safe to travel (this is only needed for certain countries)
Your pet may require a blood test to prove that they are protected against the rabies virus if you are leaving the EU. Results from this test can take up to 4 weeks so please allow plenty of time before you leave for your adventure. It’s always worth checking with us before you plan to take them away, to avoid any potential problems arising!
At STAR Vet Clinic, our owner and vet Emma has a wealth of experience issuing pet passports. She worked in a zoo for four years and spent a considerable amount of time dealing with imported and exported animals. You can therefore rest assured she will be thorough as well as efficient whilst helping you obtain the necessary documentation for your travels.
