All of our staff have their pets microchipped –you should too!
When it comes to identity tags, while they’re still strongly recommended, they can easily become lost or broken. In fact, some animals come up with some pretty creative ways to free themselves from their collars. It is for that reason microchipping is so important.
At the STAR Vet Clinic, every member of our team has their pet microchipped. While it’s not nice to think about losing your companion, a microchip provides peace of mind that you can be contacted should they ever go missing.
By microchipping your companion you are ensuring your contact details are with them at all times, which is particularly reassuring should they ever become separated from you. The best news is that inserting a microchip is quick, relatively painless, and only needs doing once.
A microchip is the same size as a grain of rice, and it is inserted under the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades. When the chip is scanned using a specialist piece of equipment it will reveal your pet’s unique chip code. This code is then linked with your contact details on a national database.
A number of animal specialists are able to scan your pet’s chip, including all veterinary practices, dog wardens and charities such as the RSPCA.
Please note: By April 2016 it will be a legal requirement for all dog owners to have their pet microchipped. Failure to do so could result in a £500 fine.
